Small Acts, Lifelong Impact: The Journey of a Young Blood Donor

It all started with a simple request from her mother; to keep her company while she headed to the blood bank, to finally tick off one of the items on her bucket list. Donating blood.

Despite her own fear of needles, Shi Ting’s mother was determined to help those in need and was willing to overcome this wall in order to achieve her goal. However, she needed a little bit of help to overcome this obstacle; the presence of her daughter.

Inspired by her mother’s actions, Shi Ting decided to go alongside her mother, to encourage and support her. This led to them taking their first steps towards their blood donation journey together.

Unsure of what to expect during her first donation, Shi Ting was pleasantly surprised to find the experience far more seamless than she had imagined.

“It was quite a fast and painless process. Everybody was really friendly too which made the experience very enjoyable.”

The Start Of Something New

This act sparked a profound shift in Shi Ting’s perspective, and a new sense of purpose within her.

“Knowing people who had once relied on blood transfusions and realising that just 30 minutes of my time could make a meaningful difference in someone's life motivated me to continue donating regularly.”

Soon, donating blood became something bigger for Shi Ting. Her perspective as a healthcare student further opened her eyes to the struggles that others went through, and how meaningful it was to be able to help them in any way possible.

Today, blood donation is a cornerstone of her routine, a habit she maintains with remarkable consistency despite a busy schedule. She does this by meeting her mother at the blood bank after school or leaving the house early to donate before meeting friends.

You Too, Can Make A Difference

Now realising how much of an impact one blood donation can make, she encourages others to do the same.

“I understand that many people may feel reluctant to donate blood because they are afraid of needles or worried about the pain. However, it really isn't as scary as it seems. Often, the first donation is the hardest, not because it hurts, but because you don't know what to expect. Once you take that first step, the experience becomes easier and less intimidating.”

She emphasises that focusing on the positive outcomes—saving lives and supporting the community—can help donors overcome their anxiety.

“Remind yourself how fortunate that you are able to donate, because that means that you are healthy! Every donation has the potential to save lives and even though you may not feel it, that small act can make a huge difference.”

Recognition For Her Efforts

Upon receiving the Youthphoria Medallion, Shi Ting spoke on what receiving this award means to her.

“I am very honoured and grateful to be able to receive this award. It serves as a reminder that even small actions can make a positive impact on others.”

This recognition serves as a milestone in her five-year blood donation journey, which began with her first donation at 18 years old. Today, it continues to fuel her resolve to continue advocating for blood donation and inspiring others to make a difference.
