The Red Cross Junior (RCJ) will host its first ever concert on 17 December in partnership with Pacifica Music Academy at the Shaw Foundation Alumni House. Serving as a platform to celebrate youth empowerment and community spirit, the event will feature a heart-warming showcase of music and performances by young talents from five pre-schools under the RCJ programme.
To find out how the children are preparing for the performance, we speak to teachers from three of the schools who share some interesting rehearsal insights.
Making Rehearsals Fun
Rehearsals require significant time and commitment, but coordinating young children who all have varying levels of energy requires a mammoth amount of effort and patience.
To handle the different energy levels during dress rehearsals, the teachers of Tinkerland @ Yunnan share their strategy of creating zones: an activity zone for energetic kids and a quiet zone for those who need a break. This ensures that the children are not overstimulated.
"Our goal is to maintain a calm, encouraging environment so each child feels secure," they shared.
Constant repetition of the same performance can make young children lose interest quickly. To maintain engagement, Teacher Muhammad Izzul Bin Tahir from PCF Sparkletots includes short movement breaks such as “freeze and pose” or “copy my move.”
“These quick, playful moments help reset their focus and also keep the practice fun and energetic,” said Izzul.
Sometimes those moments of spontaneity turn into something more meaningful. Izzul also shared that some of the play moves that children came up with were so creative that it ended up in their final choreography!
Building Confidence and Teamwork
The ultimate goal for the teachers of all three schools is the same: to help kids gain confidence.
M.Y. World’s Teacher Walter Tan sees a connection between music and the programme’s values, believing music supports RCJ’s values by promoting teamwork, confidence, and perseverance.
“When the children sing and move together, they learn to listen, cooperate, and encourage one another—building the sense of unity and compassion that RCJ stands for,” he shares.
