[Aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah & Monsoon Floods in Sri Lanka] Singapore Red Cross Deploys Response Team to Sri Lanka as Flood-Affected Families Face a Long Road to Recovery

Singapore, 19 December 2025 – Weeks after Cyclone Ditwah tore through large parts of Sri Lanka, followed by prolonged monsoon rains and flooding, many families remain displaced and struggling to meet their most basic needs. Access to safe shelter, healthcare, sanitation, and livelihood recovery continues to be urgently needed as communities begin the difficult process of recovery.

In response, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) is deploying a team of four trained responders to Sri Lanka from 19 to 25 December to support the ongoing relief operations led by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS). This deployment reinforces SRC’s commitment to stand in solidarity with affected communities during this critical phase, following SRC’s earlier cash contribution of SGD$50,000 for the purchase and distribution of relief items.

On the ground, the SRC team will work alongside SLRCS to:

  • Support temporary shelters and medical camps for flood-affected communities
  • Conduct Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities to reduce health risk
  • Engage communities through environmental awareness
  • Assess evolving humanitarian needs to inform continued relief and early recovery planning

“The floods have left many families struggling to regain stability and meet daily necessities. The SRC team is deployed to Sri Lanka to support the vital work of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, strengthen relief efforts on the ground, and assess how we can best support recovery in the months ahead. As we enter the festive season, we also call upon our fellow Singaporeans to extend their support to the affected communities in Sri Lanka by supporting our fundraising appeal,” said Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General/CEO of the Singapore Red Cross.

“While many of us are preparing to spend the year-end with our families, thousands of families in Sri Lanka are still trying to rebuild their lives. Being there during this period is about standing in solidarity and supporting recovery where help is still urgently needed.” said Thakshayeni Skanthakumar, a trained SRC volunteer and a member of the SRC team being deployed to Sri Lanka.
