Patron of Singapore Red Cross in Cairo, Egypt
Singapore, 21 September 2025 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) is intensifying support to the relief operations in Gaza and Egypt by Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners, including the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), with close to SGD 1.2 million in humanitarian aid. As part of the State Visit to Cairo, Egypt, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam visited the Egyptian Red Crescent, where he witnessed the symbolic handover of donations from the Singapore Red Cross to the Egyptian Red Crescent.
The current tranche of aid comprises the previously announced SGD 440,000 worth of tents and a new commitment of SGD 758,000 for essential medical and educational services for Palestinian evacuees in Egypt:
- Medical consumables and equipment, benefiting approximately 4,000 evacuees and their companions
- A mobile education unit, to serve around 2,000 Palestinian children residing in ERC-managed accommodation centres
“Over the last 22 months, over 115,000 Palestinians from Gaza have sought refuge in Egypt, and whose lives have now come to a standstill. Together with the Egyptian Red Crescent, this tranche of aid represents our unwavering commitment to ensuring that displaced children can continue to learn and that families receive the medical care they urgently need. We believe that access to education and healthcare is not only a fundamental need, but also a lifeline of dignity and hope for those rebuilding their lives. Meanwhile we will do what we can to continue our relief efforts for the displaced communities within Gaza,” said Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General and CEO.
To date, the SRC has contributed SGD 1.9 million in humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, channelled through the Egyptian Red Crescent, which included medical supplies, hygiene kits, food provisions, water filtration systems, and food parcels. This also included the deployment of an operations coordinator and an 8-person team to assist the ERCS with relief operations in 2024. SRC has also contributed an additional SGD 500,000 for the relief operations through its other partners in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement such as the International Committee of the Red Cross.
