At 30, Ms Lydia Lee has now dedicated half her life as a volunteer with the Singapore Red Cross. A recipient of this year’s Singapore Red Cross High Commendation Award, Lydia looks back on how her interest in first aid at the age of 15 became the cornerstone of her contributions.
Curiosity is often portrayed in a negative light. If Alice hadn’t been curious about the bunny in a waistcoat she wouldn’t have gotten lost in Wonderland. If Nemo wasn’t so insistent about exploring the world beyond his home in the Great Barrier Reef, he wouldn’t have ended up in a fish tank in a dentist’s office. Yet, Ms Lydia Lee is proof that chasing one’s interests and falling down the proverbial rabbit hole could actually be a good thing.
After all, her award-winning volunteer journey was sparked by a keen interest in first aid. This led her to the Singapore Red Cross’ local services department where she eventually discovered that the best way to practice first aid was through volunteering at various events.
When asked about a memorable experience, Lydia cites the OCBC Cycle in 2022. As it was an overnight event, an extensive amount of manpower was requested. Therefore, over thirty volunteers gathered per session, braving wind and rain. While they were stressed and sleep-deprived, Lydia fondly recalls the event because of the friends she made along the way and through that night.
Think Big, Start Small, Build Deep
“I think there’s a notion that someone is only useful when they are called to be part of a bigger movement. I think it is actually about every individual doing their part in making Singapore a safer place. It’s not just about spotting the suspicious bag or character in the MRT station, but also about helping the wobbly uncle down the stairs, or offering to carry the grocery bags for a mum who is juggling a baby. It’s always the small things done every other day that can help individuals in the community realise they are being looked out for. I believe that this is what will help Singapore stay resilient in times of emergencies.”
And The Award Goes To
“I am honoured to be a recipient of the Singapore Red Cross High Commendation Award 2025. I look forward to meeting like-minded people at the Red Cross Awards Day, and to sharing ideas on how we can continue this spirit of volunteerism.”
Get Curious and Take that First Step
“Do you know exactly what you want to do? Great! You don’t know? No worries — just sign up on the Red Cross volunteer portal, come for the induction session, and hear from the volunteers. Find out what we do, and how to get started. While you will feel the most resistance taking that first step, simply click on that ‘sign up’ button. Take the fall, it gets easier from there.”
