Singapore, 2 April 2025 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) today deployed 90 water filters, which were pre-positioned in Yangon, Myanmar, to Mandalay and Sagaing, to support communities-in-need, following its needs assessment. These portable filtration systems are a vital part of SRC’s ongoing efforts in WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and clean water access.
The Singapore Red Cross has received close to S$1.5M in donations for the Myanmar & Thailand Earthquake fundraising appeal, since the launch on 30 March 2025. Close to 30 fundraising campaigns, online and offline, are being launched by individuals, groups and companies to lend a hand.
SRC Secretary-General/CEO Mr Benjamin William said, “The earthquake compounds an already dire humanitarian crisis caused by conflict, displacement, and past disasters. Providing reliable solutions to clean water will ensure that affected communities have consistent access to safe drinking water and help to mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases. We thank the People of Singapore for responding generously to our Appeal. The road ahead is long; much more will be required in the days and weeks ahead. We will press on in our response. Meanwhile, we will continue to reach out to the migrant community in Singapore from Myanmar, to offer them psychosocial support”, he added.
Mental Health Support “Safe Space”
The SRC will host its second walk-in “safe space” at Red Cross House (15 Penang Lane, Singapore 238486) on Sunday, 6 April, to offer mental health support to Myanmar and Thais residing in Singapore, whose loved ones were affected by the earthquake. SRC’s Community Health outreach for Wellness (CHoW) & Singapore Red Cross Academy’s Centre for Psychosocial Support (CPSS) will provide:
- Psychological First Aid
- Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities to foster resilience
- Food, drinks and WiFi (for calls to home)
Myanmar volunteers will be present to facilitate and support 'Restoring Family Links' (RFL), a tracing service to assist Singapore residents to locate their immediate family members who may have been affected by the disaster with whom they have difficulty in contacting.
