[Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria] Singapore Red Cross Sends Second Tranche of Humanitarian Aid to Support Türkiye And Syria

Singapore, 14 February 2023 – In response to the severity of the situation in Türkiye and Syria, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will be contributing a second tranche of aid to assist communities affected by the earthquake.

Valued at S$1 million, the second tranche of aid will be used to directly support the humanitarian relief and response operations of our partners from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) and Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), to communities affected by the Türikye-Syria Earthquake.

The breakdown of second tranche is as follows:

For Türkiye  SGD 400,000 to the Turkish Red Crescent Society and International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Society (IFRC). The funds will go towards meeting the immediate and early recovery needs of the affected communities, including the purchase and distribution of food, water, tents, blankets, sleeping bags, bed chairs and mattresses to meet the urgent basic and shelter needs of the people whose houses have been destroyed. It will also support mental and physical health services and protection for vulnerable groups.

For Syria  SGD 400,000 to the IFRC operations (including supporting the work of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent). Working through the IFRC, the funds will go towards meeting the immediate and early recovery needs of the affected communities in an already complex humanitarian setting. This includes the distribution of food, household items, and shelter support. It will also support volunteers providing health services, access to clean water and sanitation facilities, and hygiene products.

For the Operations of the  International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)  SGD 200,000 to support the humanitarian activities of the ICRC which is working with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) to help the affected communities including providing emergency relief, livelihood support, and the provision of essential services such as supporting hospitals with surgical capacity and medical supplies to ensure the continuity of life-saving operations.

Over and above the above mentioned support, the Singapore Red Cross has also set aside SGD 100,000 for freight and logistical costs for the possible shipment of relief supplies, such as medicines to Türkiye and Syria.

This disbursement follows SRC’s initial contribution of USD 50,000 each to the Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRCS) and Syrian Arab Red Crescent Society (SARC), through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC).

Outpouring of Support and Solidarity

In Singapore, donations to the SRC’s fundraising appeal (8 February – 13 February 2023) have reached over S$3 million. The amount was raised from the donations of people across Singapore and corporate companies such as Charles & Keith and Marina Bay Sands, as well as through fundraising initiatives by companies and schools in Singapore, including DBS, Overseas Family School, St. Joseph Institution International, and local businesses such as Crystal Hearts SG and For Duchess, by Duke.

“We are thankful for the tremendous support that the Singaporean community has shown towards our fundraising efforts for Türkiye and Syria. It is heartening to see the outpouring of care and concern for the affected communities by the people of Singapore, also expressed in their generosity in supporting the survivors of the earthquake. The humanitarian needs for both Türkiye and Syria are massive and the operations are complicated. We will continue to work closely with the IFRC, ICRC, and the two National Societies to ensure that the funds raised are distributed effectively and transparently, to provide the most appropriate and timely assistance on the ground. We hope for continued support of our fundraising efforts, to sustain our humanitarian aid to the survivors of this devastating disaster.” said Benjamin William, Secretary General/CEO of Singapore Red Cross.

The Singapore Red Cross has activated its “Restoring Family Links” (RFL) service to assist Singapore residents to locate their immediate family members who may have been affected by the disasters with whom they have difficulty in contacting. For assistance, please contact SRC at rfl@redcross.sg.
