“I Just Wanted to Follow In My Father’s Footsteps”

Champion of Champions Medallion recipient Mr Amri Fadzillah celebrates his 155th blood donation this year. What began as a childhood desire to emulate his father has blossomed into a personal commitment to join arms with the 1.8% of the population who supply blood for everyone else.

When he made his first donation at 18 during a blood drive at his junior college (JC), there was none of the usual hesitation or fear that one might have expected from a teenager. Mr Amir Fadzillah just wanted to be like his dad.

Son of a Donor

At the tender age of 15, when most kids would be found playing outdoors or online, Mr Amri Fadzillah was curious. He had noticed his father returning from donating blood and curiosity prompted him to ask his father about the process. Though his father neither encouraged nor discouraged him, the seed was planted. By the time a blood donation drive arrived at his JC, he simply dived right in. Thereafter, he began making subsequent donations at Bloodbank@HSA.

“I was in awe with the facilities, and this was somewhere in 2001 or 2002, before the facelift we see today. I had a motorcycle back then, therefore travelling to and from Bloodbank@HSA wasn't a hassle at all.”

A Family of Donors

“My motivation for donating has changed over the years. At first, it was just simply about following in my dad’s footsteps. Then, it evolved and I began aiming for the medals. However, now that I am in my 40s, I just wanted to continue to help others as the number of resident donors in Singapore is less than 2%. Since I am a willing donor, I will continue to donate for as long as I can.”

Among his many donations over the years, reaching his 100th donation stands out as his most meaningful milestone. Additionally, the Champion of Champions medallion Mr Amri will receive this year for his 155th donation holds special significance, as it marks the first time he will attend such a recognition ceremony accompanied by his two sons.

He feels elated at the prospect of sharing this achievement with his children, perhaps planting the seeds for the next generation of donors in his family.

Family as the Foundation

Throughout his donor journey, the unwavering support of family and friends has been crucial in sustaining his commitment. He views this support as the essential foundation that enables him to continue his regular donations year after year and to be a brave advocate to his loved ones and colleagues.

Blood donation is fulfilling, safe, and relatively painless. The slight discomfort is easily outweighed by the satisfaction of knowing the positive impact of each donation.”

As Mr Amri prepares to accept his medallion with his sons by his side, his journey represents not just personal achievement but the potential for creating a multi-generational legacy. What began as a simple act of following his father's example has evolved into a profound commitment to Singapore that may now inspire his own children.
