A Heart That Bleeds For Others

Long nights and a ton of coffee is what Software Developer Mr Cris Anthony Sarmien Dinglasan is used to. However, the 25-year-old Youthphoria Medallion recipient is committed to switching things up for the sake of the three lives he’d save every time he donates.

Cris’s journey as a blood donor began at 19, during a blood drive organised with his National Service unit. Like many first-time donors, he was afraid of how painful it would be.

“I had the initial impression that blood donations would hurt, and during my first donation I honestly felt quite scared at first. When I saw that the donors in the blood bank were actually quite relaxed, I started to relax as well. The actual process itself is quite relaxing, so it wasn't at all difficult to start with my blood donor journey.”

Cris was inspired by the memory of one of his childhood heroes, internet animator Edd Gould, who passed away from leukaemia in 2012 at the age of 23.

“His work had made a profound impact on me and my sense of humour and life direction, and knowing that donating blood could help people who are in the same situation that he was in makes blood donation worth it.”

Cheers to Your Good Health

“My biggest motivator is learning how much blood Singapore needs every day, and how, by donating one time, I can help save 3 lives. I've been blessed with good health. If doing something as simple as going to the blood bank every few months can help people with their health, I personally think it wouldn't be fair of me to not do so.”

Despite his dedication, maintaining a regular donation schedule is not without its challenges. As a software developer, Cris often works late nights, fuelled by pots of coffee, which can affect his sleep and diet — key factors in ensuring eligibility to donate.

There have been instances where he was turned away due to low haemoglobin levels, which he finds discouraging. Yet, these setbacks only strengthen his resolve to prioritise his health to continue helping others. He keeps himself motivated by the simplicity and joy of the process, carrying his donor card in his wallet as a reminder of when he can donate next.

Young But Strong

Receiving the Youthphoria Medallion this year is a significant milestone for Cris. “I feel quite honoured. To me, all of my blood donation medallions are reminders of all of the lives that I might’ve made a genuine impact on.”

His family and friends, initially apprehensive about his decision to donate — particularly his mother — are now immensely proud of his efforts. Their support has been a source of encouragement throughout his journey.

“I understand that donating blood can be quite intimidating, but it's painless. And with just an hour or two of your time, most of that being traveling to the nearest Blood Bank, is all you need to help 3 people live and be healthy. It's one of the most generous things you can do with so little effort.”
