Inaugural International Humanitarian Law Roundtable

Held at the National University of Singapore on 15 September 2022, the inaugural Singapore Roundtable on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) was aimed at enhancing the understanding and raising awareness of IHL's application to weapon technologies, the limits IHL places on the development and use of such technologies, as well as how these limits are interpreted and applied by the states. Attended by 20 participants, the Roundtable was jointly organised by the Centre for International Law of the National University of Singapore (CIL-NUS), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the Singapore Red Cross (SRC).

In his welcome address, Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General / CEO of the Singapore Red Cross shared that new weapon technologies and methods of warfare present new avenues of inflicting pain on individuals during armed conflicts. On the other hand, advanced technologies have brought about more precise targeting, minimising collateral damage. To maintain relevance, it is imperative to establish novel policies to address asymmetrical warfare.
