Singapore Red Cross Debuts at National Day Parade’s Dynamic Defence Display: A Showcase of Community Resilience

This year, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) expanded its role at the National Day Parade (NDP) held at the Padang. In addition to providing first aid coverage for spectators and participating in the marching contingent, SRC made its debut in the Dynamic Defence Display segment of the NDP show. This participation underscores SRC’s auxiliary role to the Singapore government in civil emergencies, enhancing community resilience.

In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Total Defence in Singapore, SRC showcased its commitment to Psychological Defence—one of the six pillars of Total Defence1. A dedicated team of 10 volunteers demonstrated Psychological First Aid (PFA) in a simulated scenario.

"In the simulated scenario, terrorists had hijacked a bus. You could see us in action as volunteers lending a helping hand to distressed passengers by providing PFA to them," said Ranitha, a volunteer.

Psychological Defence is critical to maintaining Singapore’s resilience. Those trained in PFA can identify signs of distress and apply coping mechanisms to support individuals facing personal crises or everyday stressful situations, whether at home or in the workplace.

These volunteers tirelessly attended NDP rehearsals over eight Saturdays, determined to contribute to the seamless execution of the performance. Proudly representing the Singapore Red Cross, they exemplified how Singaporeans can play a vital role in providing assistance during crises and defending the nation.

"Singaporeans will continue to strengthen ourselves and our community. There's a role for everyone in Total Defence. Together, we keep Singapore strong. I was proud to be a member of the Singapore Red Cross and was exceptionally honoured to participate in the Total Defence segment," said Ms Jacqueline Powers.

The volunteers' dedication, compassion, and invaluable contributions exemplified the spirit of volunteerism that underpinned the NDP, bringing the community together in times of need.

1 - The other pillars of Total Defence are military, civil, economic, social and digital defence.
