At the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Emergency Services Behavioural Conference's (ESBC) Thriving Together Seminar on 17 October 2024, Ms Durga Naidu, Head of Department, of the Singapore Red Cross Academy's (SRCA) Centre for Psychosocial Support (CPSS) shared practical insights on 'How Leaders Can Foster a Culture of Care and Support'.
Ms Durga highlighted that building a culture of care is integral to bolster team morale, strengthen trust and enhance team performance.
"A culture of care is built through open communication, empathy and respect, work-life balance, and teamwork. When employees feel genuinely supported, they are more engaged, loyal, and productive," she said.
Leaders, Ms Durga underscored, play a pivotal role in shaping a supportive culture.
"Leaders can foster a caring culture by creating safe spaces for open communication, demonstrating appreciation and recognising the team members' efforts, promoting work-life balance, and offering mental health and well-being resources," Ms Durga said.
These approaches can pave the way for a caring, resilient culture that positively impacts individuals and teams.
Leaders can set the tone for the organisation's culture by embracing empathy, active listening and approachability while reflecting on improving care for their teams. By setting an example in their daily interactions, they send a powerful message about the importance of care, and respect within the workplace.
The Thriving Together Seminar was conducted to commemorate the SCDF Paracounselling Scheme's 25th anniversary, reinforcing the SCDF's and SRCA's commitment to embrace a holistic approach to mental health and resilience.
