Thanks to PUMA Singapore, Youth Find Their Passion for Baking

Cognisant of the value of providing out-of-reach opportunities and unique experiences to children without access to such experiences, PUMA Singapore organised a baking workshop for 27 children of the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) Young Hearts programme.

Hailing from disadvantaged backgrounds, the children had an enjoyable two-hour session making adorable hedgehog cookies at the baking workshop held at HomeTeamNS Balestier on 20 June. Leveraging a mould, the children prepared the hedgehog cookies using melted chocolate and biscuit crumbs.

Through the baking workshop, children unleashed their creativity while learning about teamwork and the importance of adopting healthy eating habits.

"Baking involves creativity, following instructions, and teamwork – skills that can benefit children in various aspects of life. Through the baking workshop, we introduce the concept of preparing nutritious food for the children, potentially sparking an interest in adopting healthy eating habits," said the spokesperson.

Supporting Vulnerable Groups

This baking workshop is aligned with PUMA's CSR Objective of supporting vulnerable groups.

"PUMA perceives this workshop as a way to empower, and contribute to the holistic development and well-being of the Young Hearts children. It is an opportunity to give back, connect with the community, and make a difference in children's lives. This is aligned with PUMA's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goal of supporting local communities and vulnerable groups. The workshop enabled PUMA employees to interact with and mentor children from different backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose," said the spokesperson.

PUMA employees found the experience rewarding, in the knowledge that they positively impacted the children's lives.

Discovering the Passion for Baking

The workshop provided a platform for the children to engage in a practical activity beyond the classroom that transcended the norm, unravelling new passions, interests and hidden talents while broadening their horizons.

A nine-year-old girl discovered a newfound passion for baking.

"I love baking. I want to try it with my mom next time since I know what to do now," said Alyssa Tan, (not her real name).

The children also forged a camaraderie with the volunteers.

"A helpful volunteer aunty helped me melt and put the chocolate on my cookie. It was pretty," said Nylea Binte Ashraf (not her real name), aged seven.

Besides eating, the children brought the hedgehog cookies home for their families.

SRC is grateful to PUMA Singapore's invaluable partnership. The baking workshop offered out-of-reach opportunities for children that they would otherwise not gain access to.
