Saving Lives, One Drop at a Time: Sally Lim’s Blood Donation Journey

Having worked as an Intensive Care Unit and transplant nurse for several years, Sally Lim, Director of Nursing at IHH Healthcare Singapore, has witnessed first-hand the life-saving impact of blood transfusions. This experience inspired her to donate blood. Today, Sally not only donates blood regularly, she also champions corporate involvement in blood donation drives, inspiring others to join the cause.

Throughout her nursing career, Sally Lim, Director of Nursing at IHH Healthcare Singapore, has observed countless instances where blood transfusions made the difference between life and death for patients. This realisation spurred her to take action. Cognisant that a small act on her part could profoundly impact others, she embarked on her blood donation journey. She has not looked back since.

“It is a meaningful act that costs nothing to the donor, other than the time taken. But it could mean saving a recipient’s life,” she said, reflecting on the significance of her contributions.

Addressing common concerns, Sally acknowledged that the fear of needles deters potential blood donors. However, she assures them of the blood donation process' simplicity and safety.

"For those who are needle-phobic, rest assured that local anaesthetics are used for the blood donation process. If you are afraid of the needle, it would be better not to look at it,” she advised.

She also underscores the rigorous screening process donors undergo to ensure they are in optimal health before their blood donation. The presence of the nurses at the blood drives and Bloodbanks also ensure the well-being and safety of the blood donors.

Colleagues Uniting for a Life-Saving Cause

One of Sally's most memorable experiences was donating blood with over 10 colleagues just before Chinese New Year, in response to an urgent shortage of O+ blood.

“More than 10 of us gathered at the BloodBank to donate blood, and there were a few first timers too. It was for a good cause and we were all happy that we could help to increase the bloodstocks,” she said. This exemplified the power of collective effort in addressing critical challenges.

The Role of Corporate Leadership in Amplifying Blood Donation

IHH Healthcare Singapore launched its first blood donation drive several years ago, and Sally has been an active advocate ever since.

Like the other leaders of IHH Healthcare Singapore, Sally believes in encouraging employee participation in blood donation drives and "walking the talk" by regularly donating blood alongside her colleagues. These efforts are integral in encouraging first-time blood donors and ensuring continued participation.

“Don’t think hard to become a donor, just respond to the screening questions carefully to ascertain you are a suitable donor. The employees at the donation centre are friendly and skilful. It is like an ant's bite. By donating one packet of blood, you could save up to three people," she said, simplifying the process for potential donors.

For Sally, blood donation is more than an individual effort. It is a meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. Sally highlighted the importance of making blood donation accessible and convenient for employees. By bringing blood donation drives closer to workplaces, corporations can enhance convenience while fostering team bonding and camaraderie.

To encourage other corporations to join the SaveLivesMovement, Sally proposed that corporations share compelling statistics, such as the number of lives saved through collected blood, during their drives.

Building a Lifesaving Movement

Sally's dedication to blood donation reflects IHH Healthcare Singapore's consistent advocacy and support of the National Blood Programme. Sally and her colleagues have forged a culture that values giving back and saving lives. Sally's story serves as a reminder that even small actions can leave an immeasurable impact. Whether as individuals or as part of a corporation, we all have the power to save lives, one drop at a time.
