Retiree Georgina Chin, 65, enjoys engaging persons with disabilities in art and craft activities. Since March 2019, she has served as a volunteer with the Singapore Red Cross’ (SRC) Day Activity Centre for the Disabled (DAC). Here’s her story.
“I used to engage autistic youth and seniors in art and craft activities. As the DAC is in the vicinity where I live, it is convenient for me to volunteer here.
My first volunteering experience at DAC was rather challenging. Because of their disabilities, the clients lacked coordination. As clients require much personal assistance, we could only engage one client at a time. Given their short attention span, it was difficult to sustain their interest in the activities. Communication also posed a problem, as some clients cannot articulate their needs. I grew to understand that patience and compassion are prerequisites for volunteers who work with persons with disability.
It is always heartwarming and rewarding to see the clients persevere in the activities. We work with the clients individually and assist them every step of the way; starting from scratch to completing the artwork. As we bond through activity and interaction, we forge a closer rapport with the clients. The personal touch and interaction are indispensable.
I find joy in engaging them in art and craft. And I am proud to share that they have managed to produce finger paintings with flower patterns; decorations featuring owls as part of recycling activity; face and hand profile artwork; and even festive decorations featuring Santa Claus and Christmas trees!
I’ve seen the pride on their faces when they complete their artwork, despite the difficulties encountered. And I am so proud of their efforts!
I also work with other volunteers to engage these clients in baking. Once, we baked pizza bread together. It was wonderful seeing them savouring the slices of pizza bread for tea!
I would encourage more people to come and volunteer at the DAC. You can do something meaningful with your time when you interact with the clients. As you shower them with the gift of love and patience, not only will you brighten their lives, you will also find happiness through volunteering.”
