We’re continuing our #SRCintheZone series with a spotlight on our very own help on wheels — Singapore Red Cross’ Medical Chaperone and Transportation (MCT). For many wheelchair users, getting to and from their medical appointments may be challenging, due to limited mobility and accessibility.
Thankfully, we’ve got the chance to hang out with Jasri and Roslan from the MCT team who provide this much needed service of helping older or disabled persons from lower-income homes get to and from their healthcare service facilities, such as medical treatments, rehabilitation and day activity centres. Come along for the ride and find out more about what motivates these two gentlemen in their drive to do good.
Meet SRC’s Road Runners, Jasri and Roslan
Jasri is our ever-friendly designated driver. Trustworthy and efficient, he effortlessly navigates hospital runs and polyclinic stops — and is always ready with a smile (and a ton of great food recs).
Roslan plays ying to Jasri’s yang. As the chaperone and personal assistant, he assists clients throughout the medical visits — handling everything from navigating the hospital grounds to collecting prescriptions, all while lending a listening ear.
What is your favourite part of your job?
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." - Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird
Jasri: Meeting clients from all walks of life! When you learn more about how they cope with their ailments and difficulties, you’re also able to help them see and appreciate their support system — friends and family — better.
Through this job, I’ve learnt to be appreciative and grateful — even for the simplest of things. I don’t take things for granted anymore, and I’m mindful about always being grateful for what I have.
Roslan: I enjoy the conversations I have with the clients. Every one of them is different and they all have their own unique stories to share that we can learn from.
Where were you working at previously, and what made you join SRC?
Jasri: I was working as an engineer up till 2023 when I realised that it was time for me to get out of my comfort zone and do something different!
Roslan: I was working in the IT division for a government agency as a senior system analyst where I tended to a variety of things. However I considered myself a retiree and I was looking for something meaningful to do with my time that allowed me more freedom. It was then that I chanced upon this posting on a job portal and saw it as fate when I got the job!
What is one thing people don’t know about your job?
Jasri: I’ve built a good rapport with our clients! They often call me with updates on their health conditions and when I’m not assigned to them for a while they’ll ask about it with questions like: “why haven’t I seen you in such a long time?”, “why don’t you pick me up anymore?”, and “do you not like me?”.
Roslan: Being a chaperone is more than being an escort to the client or merely accompanying them to the hospital. Client-engagement is an essential part of the job because most of them are seniors who are not in the best of health and who stay alone. Their interaction with people is very minimal, and so the best thing we can do is talk to them and engage them. That is enough to make their day better, and that’s the personal element of the job that most don't understand.
For Jasri and Roslan, life on the road is a fulfilling and joyous daily affair. Their roles may differ but they share one common trait — a heart for serving others. Their dedication and compassion for others reminds us that there is no act of kindness ever too small!
Stay tuned for our next #SRCInTheZone series, where we spotlight more everyday heroes at SRC. (Hint: 💰🤝📈)
