Having a Safe Home

Having a Safe Home

One would assume that home is the safest place :)

However, do you know what accidents could possibly happen at home? Here is a checklist that can help you identify potential dangers at home and address them accordingly!

Floor

Potential risk: falls

  • Remove all loose mats or ensure they are firmly secured
  • Use a mat with slip resistant backing to prevent the mat from sliding when you step on it
  • Keep your floor dry at all times
  • Clear clutter on the floor and keep wires and cords tucked away neatly

Kitchen

Potential risk: cuts, burns and scalds

  • Angle the knife away from yourself when cutting food to prevent injuries
  • Store knives in a knife holder away from (young) children’s reach
  • Always stay close by when cooking. If flammable substances (eg. oil and fat) catch fire, use a wet cloth or a fire extinguisher to put it out. Never use water!
  • Keep flammable materials (eg. newspapers, kitchen towels, etc.) away from stoves or open flame
  • Use oven mitts to prevent scalds
  • Always place pot handles inwards to avoid knocking them over onto the floor
  • Clean up mess and spills to prevent accidents

Electrical

Potential risk: electric shocks

  • Keep electrical cords away from water sources
  • Replace any shredded, broken or exposed electrical cords
  • Install circuit breakers to prevent any electrical accidents
