Singapore Red Cross Extends Emergency Relief To Survivors Of Typhoon Haiyan

10 November 2013 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) is contributing emergency relief supplies worth $100,000 for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. A team of SRC volunteers and staff will leave for the affected areas at Visayas in the next few days to help with the distribution of relief items.

This would be the fourth mission that SRC has deployed to the Philippines over the past two months. The third – a medical relief mission – had just returned to Singapore on 8 November 2013. All three teams had been deployed to Bohol island, which was devastated by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on 15 October 2013.

“It is clear that given the scale of destruction by Super Typhoon Haiyan, more help is urgently needed. As we stand in solidarity with the affected communities, we hope the donor community will give generously to relief efforts that we’d be mounting,” said Mr Benjamin William, SRC Secretary General, noting that “the consecutive news of disasters that have hit Southeast Asia over the past months is saddening.”

The Singapore Red Cross calls on the people of Singapore to donate to its public appeal for ‘Southeast Asia Emergencies’ launched since 17 October 2013 to give relief to Cambodia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam following the widespread devastation caused by recent tropical storms, typhoons and earthquake.

To date, the Singapore Red Cross has contributed S$90,000 worth of relief items in daily essentials to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (S$30,000 each) for the communities affected by the storms, as well as S$100,000 worth of relief items including food, basic hygiene and medical supplies for the earthquake survivors in the Philippines. The Singapore Red Cross will continually monitor and analyse the situation, and coordinate with its sister Red Cross national societies for the appropriate humanitarian action.
