The vibrant strokes and expressive colors of Jean-Michel Basquiat's artwork created moments of pure joy for 18 residents of the Red Cross Home for the Disabled (RCHD) and four Young Hearts children and youth. Gathered before the iconic American artist's sketches at Marina Bay Sands, the residents discovered a world where art could transcend the traditional boundaries of communication.
For these individuals — many of whom face physical, social, or economic challenges — this experience offered more than a temporary escape; it provided a gateway to self-expression, emotional connection, and a sense of inclusion often denied by their circumstances.
The abstract and thought-provoking sketches told a unique narrative that ignited deep reflections on fashion, literature, and technology. For those with limited mobility or verbal expression, the visual feast became a powerful form of engagement with the wider world of art and culture. Through art, they were able to glean insights into the artist's private life, his younger days as a fledgling artist, his challenges and triumphs, and the contemplations that paved the way for him to become one of the world's most recognised artists.
Additionally, the participants had opportunities to respond creatively to what they'd experienced in the Basquiat Expression Room. Through these interactive elements, they were provided a chance to participate, cultivate a sense of agency, and express their own artistic impulses inspired by what they had seen.
The Singapore Red Cross expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Covenant ART for the opportunity for the residents of the Red Cross Home for the Disabled, and the children and youth of the Young Hearts programme to visit the exhibition. The exhibition offered not just a day out but a meaningful engagement with art that continued to bring joy in the days that followed.
