[Gaza Humanitarian Crisis] Singapore Red Cross Launches Fundraising Appeal Amid Gaza Ceasefire

Singapore, 18 February 2025 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has launched a public fundraising appeal to support the scaling up of relief operations in Gaza by Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners, including the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), amid the ongoing ceasefire. Funds raised from this appeal will directly support the displaced Palestinian communities in Gaza.

SRC had earlier committed SGD 300,000 in relief supplies for the affected communities, when the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire took effect on 19 January 2025.

“With the first phase of the ceasefire in place, and discussions underway for the second phase of the ceasefire, it is crucial that we step up on humanitarian efforts to address the urgent needs of civilians most of whom are without even the most basic necessities such as food and shelter. With the launch of our fundraising appeal, we hope that the people of Singapore will come together to extend their support to the affected communities and provide some respite as Ramadan approaches,” said Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General/CEO of the Singapore Red Cross.

Since the start of the first phase of the ceasefire, more than 1,500 staff and volunteers from the ERC have been working tirelessly to ensure that hundreds of truckloads of relief supplies pass through the Rafah borders and into Gaza on a daily basis. ERC continues to be the main coordinating body for all humanitarian aid on the Egyptian side of the border. Funds raised from the appeal will be channelled into the procurement of urgently needed relief items including food parcels, hygiene kits and medical supplies.

To date, SRC has disbursed close to SGD 1.3 million worth of relief aid through the ERC. This includes the deployment of an operations coordinator and an 8-person team to assist the ERC with relief operations in 2024. SRC will continue to work with the Movement partners to monitor the situation in Gaza closely and adjust the response according to the needs of the affected communities.
