Learning Life Skills From Red Cross Youth

Daphne Goh was a Red Cross Youth (RCY) Link in primary school and a RCY Cadet in secondary school and subsequently served as a Volunteer Instructor. She then rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Director of RCY, and was eventually appointed Deputy Director of RCY Youth Members @ Districts, a platform for youth from both uniformed and non-uniformed groups to participate in community work and spearhead youth-led events. A recipient of the prestigious President’s Red Cross Youth Award, Daphne has acquired useful skills in first aid, lifesaving, leadership, teamwork, and communication through RCY.

Daphne Goh was an active member of the Red Cross Youth (RCY) throughout her primary and secondary education. While pursuing her tertiary education, she served as a Volunteer Instructor and rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Director, which saw her representing RCY at the national level and collaborating with other uniformed groups as the point-of-contact for various national events.

In 2016, she led a team of youth leaders in establishing RCY - Youth Members@Districts, a new platform for youth from both uniformed and non-uniformed groups to participate in community work and spearhead youth-led events.

Daphne currently holds the position of Deputy Director, RCY. She is also a member of the Southeast Asia Youth Network (SEAYN) supported by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). In recognition of her resolute efforts and contributions, she received the prestigious President’s Red Cross Youth Award from the President of Singapore at the Singapore Red Cross Awards Ceremony in 2019.

One of her most memorable RCY experiences was when she received a handwritten thank you note from a blood donor at a blood donation recruitment drive. In the note, the blood donor expressed his gratitude to the RCY for advocating the life saving cause of blood donation. The blood donor's wife was involved in a near-fatal accident years ago, and his wife survived because she had received blood. That message reinforced Daphne's belief that "nothing is more rewarding than knowing that you have made a positive impact on someone else's life".

Through her journey with RCY, Daphne has acquired useful skills in first aid, lifesaving, leadership, teamwork, and communication. She believes that these skills have helped her in her career by enabling her to communicate effectively with her team, and leverage the strengths of different team members.

"Red Cross Youth has enriched my life by providing me with opportunities to develop important skills, make a positive impact on others, and learn the value of giving back to my community. The experiences and lessons I acquired from RCY continue to shape me as a person today," she said.

Daphne encourages potential and current youth volunteers to always give their best effort, as their contributions matter to the people they serve. To bring RCY to greater heights, she strives to bring about more opportunities for RCY to collaborate with other youth organisations on outreach efforts.
