Singapore, 27 August 2026 – In response to the destructive flash floods that struck near the Nepal-China border in northern Nepal and China’s Xizang/Tibet region, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has pledged S$50,000 in humanitarian aid to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement partners to support the immediate response and relief efforts in Nepal, including distributing drinking water and emergency supplies, such as tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats, first aid kits, and body bags.  

In addition, the SRC will launch a public fundraising appeal tomorrow for the communities affected by the disaster. The funds raised will be channeled through the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and other humanitarian partners to support the ground operations and to address humanitarian needs and developments on the ground. 

SRC has activated the Restoring Family Links (RFL) service, which helps reconnect loved ones who have lost contact in the aftermath of emergencies. Those who have lost contact with their family members or have missing loved ones in Nepal or Tibet may contact the SRC for support, regardless of nationality. They can email rfl@redcross.sg for assistance.

The devastating situation continues to unfold – over a thousand people are missing, many thousands of families are affected, and livelihoods have been severely disrupted. Critical infrastructure has been severely damaged, making it hard to reach the remaining communities. There are warnings of further flooding, and the extent of the devastation might still grow. The Singapore Red Cross is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to deploy a team to support our partners on the ground. On 26 August 2026, a severe flash flood near the Nepal-China border caused extensive damage downstream in northern Nepal and China’s Xizang/Tibet region. Over 160 people have reportedly lost their lives, and nearly 1,500 are missing across Nepal and Tibet. Those missing include local residents, workers, emergency personnel, and tourists. Homes, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure have been severely damaged, leaving several communities isolated and difficult to access for rescue teams, particularly in the Rasuwa district and Gyirong Port. Search and rescue operations are ongoing alongside moving families in flood-risk areas to safety. 

The Nepal Red Cross Society has deployed teams to the affected areas, while additional emergency teams and volunteers are being mobilised to support local branches with limited response capacity. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (IFRC) has released nearly CHF 1 million and is providing operational support to the Nepal Red Cross Society response, with additional assistance on standby.
