Help is always around the corner with HoME+

Supramaniam Danalekshumy, 72, has been living alone since her husband passed away five years ago. Battling medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart, lung and kidney problems, she runs the risk of collapsing alone without anyone coming to her aid. Fortunately, she was introduced to the Singapore Red Cross' (SRC) Home Monitoring and Eldercare system. Since installing the HoME+ system, she feels more assured living at home alone.

Seniors or persons with disabilities living alone often grapple with fear and run the risk of collapsing alone at home without anyone coming to their aid.

Supramaniam Danalekshumy, 72, has been living alone since her husband passed away five years ago. She battles a host of medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart, lung and kidney problems. Besides her four children — one of whom stays overseas — she has seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. They visit her often, but she keeps her medical predicaments to herself to stave off their worries.

Despite her medical ailments, she remains in good spirits. Mdm Danalekshumy cherishes her independence and keeps herself busy by exercising, cooking, attending flower arrangement classes and taking up new hobbies at her community centre. Passionate about utilising her free time to make a difference in the lives of others, she is also an ElderAid volunteer who befriends other seniors. She relishes the times spent bringing joy into their lives.

HoME+ provides assurance for those living alone

Yet occasionally, Mdm Danalekshumy worries that she will collapse alone at home without anyone coming to her aid. Fortunately, someone introduced her to the Singapore Red Cross' (SRC) Home Monitoring and Eldercare (HoME+) system.

HoME+ tracks active movements, sleep patterns, heart health, and also offers a built-in GPS option. SRC's Community Responders will be notified to check in whenever unusual patterns are detected. When in distress, the elderly can also activate a panic button to seek assistance.

Since she installed the HoME+ in her home in 2019,  Danalekshumy is more assured that help will be always around the corner in case of a medical emergency.

“HoME+ system has been very helpful. The system detects inactivity or lack of movement. The call centre will contact me to enquire if I am alright. It is good to be assured that someone cares for me in case anything happens. I don't need to worry,” she explains.

Mdm Danalekshumy also encouraged her neighbours who live alone to consider installing the system in their homes.

“Some neighbours were concerned that the HoME+ system might invade their privacy. But it is just a motion sensor that detects our movements, not a camera. I don't need to worry about my privacy,” she says.

She hopes that the elderly and persons with disabilities living alone can consider installing the HoME+ system in their homes as it leverages motion-sensing technology that safeguards the well-being of those who live alone. This system is a social enterprise payable for those who can afford it. It is also installed in the homes of SRC’s beneficiaries.

"It is a great help and safety net for seniors living on their own, post-surgery patients, and those with disabilities. I hope that others in similar situations can also benefit from this system," Mdm Danalekshumy says.
